Get Ready for Upcoming NMFC Changes in 2025

October 1, 2024

Shippers, please be aware of the upcoming changes planned for the NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) system. While the exact list of proposed changes will not be released by the NMFTA until January 30, 2025, it is crucial for shippers to begin planning now, to minimize new classification and cost implications on their business.

What’s changing?

What we know at this point is that the NMFTA will be condensing approximately 5,000 single class NMFC items (with no liability, stowability, or handling concerns) and grouping them into NMFC numbers that are based on density. They will be adding (2) sub classes 12 and 13 to the current 11 sub density-based scale allowing for lower class to apply on items that are at least 35 pounds per cubic foot.

How will the new NMFC regulations impact your business?

  • Entering dimensions as part of the shipment booking process will be critical, if not mandatory
  • You will need to implement a system in which product dimensions are captured prior to booking a shipment
  • If you utilize a 3PL for shipping services, your product catalogs within TMS platforms will likely need to be updated

What is the timing of the new regulations?

  • Docket issue date: January 30, 2025 (this will be the first chance to review the proposed changes to Docket 2025-1)
  • FCDC public meeting: March 3, 2025 (this will be a hearing to review proposed changes)
  • Supplement effective date: May 3, 2025 (approved changes from Docket 2025-1 become effective)
